Art in The Garagemahal

This morning I headed out into our garage, AKA The Garagemahal, in search of a blue tarp. The tarp was not out anywhere apparent, I grabbed a rake and used it to pull down the attic ladder and ventured up. No blue tarp in the attic, but there in a pile where old canvass, it has been years since I looked at these. I unfolded them and tossed them down to the garage floor so that I could have a good look. I like to see art I did years ago. I like my artwork, and I become inspired by what I have done, and realize what I can do now with experience.
The Garagemahal has served many purposes in years past, it has been a concert hall, a party room, a man cave, and an art studio. Acoustic artists who were traveling would contact us and ask if they could preform in The Garagemahal, word got out on the "house concert" circuit that we had this "venue". After noticing some disrepair I ended the use for concerts. Even though we were not having concerts and parties, we would still go out and enjoy the fireplace.
At one point my neighbor who was also an artist, and I decided to set up the Garagemahal so that we could draw. One night a week we would have a model come and pose for several hours. It was the first time since college that I had drawn a model from life. My neighbor moved away, and I no longer would go out and draw in the Garagemahal. I am fortunate to have other studio spaces in my home to work in. The poor Garagemahal has become a drop zone, and well a garage.

These memories came back to me while doing my anthropological dig in the garage this morning. I have other artist friends, and it occurs to me there may be an opportunity to get back to group drawing and painting in The Garagemahal. I hope to find some artist friends who would help me clear out the space, and make an area to draw and paint in once again.

  3. Yes, a little bit every day will do it. My nose is burning from sucking up dust while cleaning. Today was sweeping grass seed and mouse poop. It was interesting to find things that the squirrels and mice had made bedding from.

  4. Wow - that sounds fantastic! Well, first sad that the Garagemahal got into such bad shape, but great that you are intent on reviving it. I would so love to join, if we were living closer...

    1. Thanks CW, Little by little I will get it back into shape. It still needs some structural work, but hasn't shifted for the worse in years, so I think it is old an stable.
